DEPARTMENT OF DERMATOVENEREOLEPROLOGY

GOVERNMENT VILLUPURAM MEDICAL COLLEGE VILLUPURAM

The Department of Dermato-Venereo-Leprology was started at Government Villupuram Medical College Hospital in March 2010. The STD clinic functioning at Villupuram GH with a physician and a counselor was relocated and incorporated into the department in June 2010. MCI inspections were held for the department in April 2011 and February 2012 when first and second renewals were obtained.

At present the department is run by one associate professor, one assistant professor, two senior residents and three junior residents.

The department caters to about 40000-45000 outpatients and 100-150 in-patients annually. Minor procedures that are done include chemocautery, electrosurgery, chemical peeling, needling for mollusca contagiosa, intralesional therapy, skin biopsy, punch skin grafting for vitiligo and excision of benign tumours.
MBBS under graduate students have started attending Dermato-Venereo-Leprology clinics from March 2012. They are posted in batches of 10-15 students for a fortnight when they are trained in basics of DVL with theory classes, clinical demonstrations and laboratory procedures. Clinical cases are demonstrated with particular emphasis on common skin infections, eczema, papulosquamous conditions and skin tumours.
