DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY
 
The Department of Physiology is one of the Main Building Blocks of Government Villupuram Medical College, Villupuram. Experienced Professors, Readers and Lecturers of this department guide the students effectively.

The Physiology department has four spacious laboratories namely haematology lab, human cum clinical lab, amphibian lab and mammalian lab with all modern facilities. Each laboratory can accommodate seventy five students at a time. The department also has two demonstration rooms with audio visual aids. For engaging the students for any practical or clinical demonstration.

The department is  also actively involved in translational and basic science research inthe fields of cardiovascular, respiratory system, neurophysiology and clinical electrophysiology including evoked potential.

ACADEMIC SESSIONS:

Every academic year 100UG students are trained efficiently by
 
  • Didactic Lectures
  • Practicals (Hematology + Clinical examination + OSPE + OSCE)
  • Small Group Teachings
  • Student Symposiums
  • Integrated Teaching with Other Departments.
The candidates are periodically assessed by Internal Assessment  (Theory + Practicals). 

Their progress is intimated to their parents/guardian.

RESEARCH PROJECTS:

Though a budding Department we have already taken giant steps forwards in the field of research.We have completed three research projects,two of which have been ICMR ( STS) approved. Currently this department has 10 projects running in the physiology Lab, approved by IEC.The faculty and students have presented in various conferences and won prizes.

  1. Visual Evoked Potential study on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease Patients. (Completed)
  2. Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential Study In Cases With  Diabetes Mellitus ( ICMR STS – Completed)
  3. Evaluation of Visual Evoked Potential in individuals with Diabetes Mellitus.( ICMR STS – Completed )

RESEARCH PUBLICATION:

4. Evaluation of Geneti influence of order of birth in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 & Type 2.
5.Evaluation of Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) in Newly Diagnosed Hypertensive individuals
6.Evaluation of Brainstem evoked auditory Potential in Newly Diagnosed Hypertensive individuals.
7.Evaluation of Pulmonary Function Test in Treated Leprosy Patients.
8.Effect of Passive smoking on Spirometry of Female rural adolescents.
9.Correlation of effects of isometric & isotonic exercise in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients.
10.Evaluation of Visual Evoked Potential(VEP) in Offspring of Diabetic Patients both Type 1 & Type 2.

 
CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION ( CME) :

            The Department Organized a CME Programme on Research Methodology “EUREKA- Re- Search on Research  “ , January 2013. This was attended by faculty from several Governemnt & Private Medical Colleges.
            The Teaching Faculty regularly attend various CME, Workshops and Conferences.

INTRACOLLEGE QUIZ COMPETITION:

The Department has proposed to conduct an Annual Intra College Quiz Competition -  MINERVA for the first year  Under Graduates.The First competition  was held on February 2012
